Telematics is a method of monitoring vehicles, trucks, equipment and other assets by using GPS technology and on-board diagnostics (OBD) to plot movements on a digital map. Also known as fleet tracking or GPS vehicle tracking, telematics is now an essential management tool for commercial and government fleets across Southeast Asia — including Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia.

 

The meaning of telematics combines two disciplines: telecommunication (exchanging information using technology) and informatics (using computers to gather and manage data). Together, they form the foundation of modern vehicle telematics systems used by fleet operators worldwide.

What are telematics systems?

A telematics system is an intelligent onboard device that records and transmits near-real-time data from your vehicle — from speed and idling to fuel use, tyre pressure, and engine diagnostics. Understanding what a telematics system does helps fleet managers make faster, more informed decisions about their vehicles.

 

To track assets, information from the vehicle is recorded via a small, telematics device — also called a black box —  that plugs into the OBD II or CAN-BUS port. A SIM card and modem in the device enables communication on the cellular network.

How telematics works

A telematics device — sometimes called a black box or OBD dongle — plugs directly into a vehicle's OBD-II or CAN-BUS port and acts as the data hub for the entire system. It is the physical hardware that makes telematics tracking possible.

 

The telematics device retrieves data generated by the vehicle, like GPS position, speed, engine light information and faults. G-force measured by a built-in accelerometer in the device. Then the telematics device sends the data up to the cloud.

What data does a telematics system collect?

A vast amount of data can be processed and analyzed with a telematics device and other connected hardware or sensors, such as:

  • Position
  • Vehicle speed
  • Trip distance/time
  • Idling time
  • Harsh braking and driving
  • Seat belt use
  • Fuel consumption
  • Vehicle faults
  • Battery voltage, and other engine data.

Finally, the data is decoded and brought into the fleet management software app for reporting and analysis. With the software, users can view and export reports and gain business intelligence such as the top 10 drivers with the highest number of speeding incidents or vehicles that are due for scheduled maintenance.

 

Data analytics and machine learning offer a way to get further use from telematics data. For example, fleets can use benchmarking to see how their fleet performs on safety as compared to other similar fleets or understand if routes are structured in the best way.
