Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about CSRD

The CSRD is a European Union directive that enhances and expands sustainability reporting requirements for businesses. It aims to improve transparency and accountability in corporate sustainability practices.

CSRD stands for Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. It replaces and strengthens the previous Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) to ensure more detailed and comparable sustainability disclosures.

CSRD reporting refers to the process by which companies disclose their sustainability performance, environmental impact, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) metrics in accordance with the directive’s guidelines.

The CSRD applies to:

  • Large EU companies with 250+ employees, €50M turnover, or €25M in assets (reporting from financial year 2027)
  • Listed SMEs, small and non-complex financial institutions, and captive (re)insurance undertakings (reporting from financial year 2028)
  • Non-EU companies with over €450M EU turnover and either a large EU subsidiary or an EU branch with €50M+ turnover (reporting from financial year 2028)

The CSRD is being phased in from 2025 to 2029, with compliance deadlines depending on company size and classification:

  • 2025: Large public-interest companies (1000+ employees) report for financial year 2024
  • 2027: Large undertakings (250+ employees, €50M turnover, or €25M balance sheet) report for financial year 2027 (postponed from 2025)
  • 2028:  Listed SMEs, small financial institutions, and captive (re)insurance undertakings report for financial year 2028 (postponed from 2026)
  • 2029: Non-EU companies with €450M+ EU revenue and an EU subsidiary/branch (€50M+ turnover) report for financial year 2028 (threshold increased from €150M)

Companies that meet the financial and operational thresholds must comply, including large enterprises, listed SMEs, and eligible non-EU businesses.

CSRD requires companies to report on:

  • Environmental impact (carbon emissions, resource use, climate risk)
  • Social factors (labor practices, diversity, community impact)
  • Governance (ethics, anti-corruption measures, executive oversight) Reports must align with European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).

The CSRD applies to companies that meet at least two of the following three criteria:

  • 250+ employees
  • €50M+ annual turnover
  • €25M+ total assets

The timeline depends on company classification, with full implementation expected by 2028.

CSRD compliance means adhering to the directive’s reporting requirements, ensuring transparent sustainability disclosure in line with EU standards.

CSRD compliance solutions include tools and technologies that help businesses accurately measure, track, and report sustainability metrics. Geotab provides data-driven solutions to support reliable emissions tracking and ensure compliance with CSRD requirements.

Geotab’s telematics solutions provide:

  • Certified CO₂ emissions calculation methodology for accurate reporting
