Integrated multi-cameras and video telematics platform delivers major gains in fleet safety, fuel efficiency, and operational performance across 2,000+ vehicle fleet.

[Birmingham, UK, 27 April 2026] Tarmac has reduced fleet collisions by 30% and significantly improved driver safety and fuel efficiency following the deployment of an integrated multi-camera and video telematics solution delivered in partnership with Motormax and Geotab.

Within 12 months of implementation, Tarmac achieved:

  • High and medium-risk drivers reduced from 40% to 6.5%
  • Fuel economy improved by 25% across the van fleet
  • 30% reduction in driver-fault collisions
  • 50% reduction in ‘pulling out’ incidents
  • 30% year-on-year saving in collision repair costs
  • Speeding incidents per 1,000 miles halved since implementation in May 2023

These data-driven results are helping Tarmac build a safer, more sustainable, and efficient fleet, while delivering proven return on investment across safety, insurance, and operating costs.

Addressing fleet safety at scale

Tarmac operates a mixed fleet of over 2,000 vehicles, including trucks, vans, pickups, and plant equipment. Managing such a large and diverse fleet across seven regions and multiple business units required improved visibility, control, and consistency in fleet operations.

A single integrated fleet platform

The Motormax multi-camera system integrates with the MyGeotab platform via API, leveraging Geotab’s rules engine and reporting capabilities to deliver a “single pane of glass” view for transport teams.

When predefined events are triggered, managers can instantly access and download video footage through a single platform. This provides crucial evidence to support driver protection, targeted training, and accurate incident reporting.

Delivering measurable return on investment

Tarmac Fleet Risk & Compliance Manager, Jonathan Meddings, said: “The integration allows managers to view telematics data and high-quality camera footage in a single platform, accelerating decision-making and streamlining fleet operations. As a result, we have already seen significant cost savings.”

Transport teams have fully embraced the solution, transforming how safety data is used, moving from limited insight and low confidence to clear evidence and actionable decision-making.

James Haycock, Director, Motormax comments, “This is a great example of what can be achieved when teams work closely together with a shared focus on safety. By combining the commitment and expertise of Motormax, Geotab and Tarmac, we’ve been able to make meaningful progress in just 12-months. Our goal is always to help fleets reduce risk, prevent incidents and better protect drivers and vulnerable road users, and these results show exactly that. We’re incredibly proud of what’s been achieved so far.”

Data-driven performance improvements

The integrated technology enables Tarmac to quantify driver performance through objective risk ratings and event-based data. This insight is central to improving safety, accountability, and cost control. Telematics and video data are directly influencing driver behaviour, helping to reduce collisions while improving fuel efficiency and operational performance.

Faster insurance claims and clearer liability

The benefits extend beyond internal operations. By integrating video and telematics data, Tarmac has strengthened collaboration with its insurer, AXA, leading to faster claims resolution and improved liability decisions.

Tarmac Head of Category Management & SRM, Lee Green, said: “We trained our insurance claims team on how to use the system so they can utilise footage to assist faster claims resolution. We are speaking to our insurers about what types of accidents we are having – for example, if the data shows a trend in rear-end shunts, we will consider adding rear cameras. The technology gives us better visibility of the fleet and the requirements for continuous improvement.”

Improving driver behaviour through targeted training

Jonathan Meddings added: “Our insurance company has provided Tarmac with a bursary, which we are now investing in multi-camera technology. We install cameras on every new vehicle because the return is proven - they reduce claims, avoid unnecessary costs, save management time and resource, and protect drivers who are not at fault.”

Telematics data enables targeted driver training based on real behaviours and trends:

“The solution enables us to design training for specific issues. As a result, we have seen a reduction in speeding -10% over the limit and 20% over the limit have halved. The data also empowers our managers to have the right conversations with drivers who are not following procedure, for example, seatbelt usage-now we have the data required to take relevant action.”

Building a culture of positive driver engagement

The technology has also transformed driver engagement and recognition. Using Geotab’s bespoke reports, Tarmac rewards positive driver behaviour through initiatives such as the ‘100 Club’, recognising drivers who achieve a perfect driver score over more than 300 miles in a month. This approach reinforces positive behaviours and promotes safer driving across the organisation.

Embedding fleet safety into governance

Fleet safety data is now embedded within Tarmac’s governance structure, with monthly MI Fleet Safety Packs reviewed in management meetings to track performance, reward success, and identify further improvements.

This has elevated fleet safety from a compliance requirement to a core operational discipline with clear accountability and measurable outcomes.

Operational and cost efficiencies beyond safety

In addition to safety improvements, the solution has delivered wider operational benefits:

  • Accurate reporting of personal mileage usage, supporting HMRC compliance
  • Detailed regional reporting to support seven regional directors
  • Reduction in unnecessary journeys and overall fleet mileage
  • Improved mileage capture for lease vehicles, enabling more accurate quotations and reduced lease costs
  • Optimisation of vehicle types, ensuring higher cost 4x4 vehicles are only used where required

Delivering long-term value

While significant benefits have already been realised, the platform provides a foundation for continued innovation and long-term value.

Jonathan Meddings concluded: “Working closely with Motormax and Geotab, we are confident that we are future-proofing our fleet safety and operations. We have only utilised a small part of the Geotab platform so far, and there is significant scope to deliver even more value.”

The collaboration between Tarmac, Motormax, and Geotab demonstrates how integrated technology, data, and driver engagement can deliver measurable and lasting improvements in fleet safety, efficiency, and cost control.
