Disconnection That Brought Us Closer
A Reflection on Human Connection in Unexpected Times

When a massive power outage hit Spain, Portugal, and parts of France, uncertainty and disruption could have easily defined the day. But for two Geotabbers, it became a chance to reconnect with neighbors, with music, and with a slower, more meaningful way of life.
For Nestor in Madrid, what began as a day of concern quickly turned into one of connection. It began when he helped his 85-year-old neighbor climb eight flights of stairs in their apartment building. “In the process, I was able to talk to virtually every neighbor,” Nestor shared. “Once-closed doors became opportunities for connection.”
From helping an elderly neighbor, to shared meals and laughter in the streets, the blackout revealed something deeply human: our innate desire to connect, support, and celebrate together.
Though the power was cut, I was delighted to see news outlets, social media and even Geotab employees reporting cities coming alive with spontaneous street music, children playing, and people rediscovering the joy of face-to-face interaction.
Ana embraced the day as a moment to slow down and turn inward. With internet and mobile service down, she made a conscious choice to step away from productivity and tune into presence. “I decided to disconnect from everything and connect to myself,” she wrote. “I sat in the armchair to read. I took a nap. I went out for a long walk.”
For both Ana and Nestor, what started as a disruption became a powerful reminder of the value of slowing down, being present, and remembering what really matters: community, kindness, and shared humanity.
At Geotab, we’re proud of our people not just for what they do, but for how they show up in their communities. This story is a testament to the spirit of empathy, adaptability, and joy—even in the dark.
The blackout may have cut power, but it illuminated something far more powerful: our capacity for empathy, presence, and connection when we need it most.
