Toronto, Ontario (December 20, 2023) - Geotab Inc. (“Geotab”), a global leader in connected transportation solutions, today announced an across-the-board win with the successful dismissal of a patent infringement lawsuit filed by WirelessWerx IP, LLC (“WirelessWerx”), a non-practicing entity (NPE). WirelessWerx agreed to a full and final dismissal of the case.

Geotab countered the lawsuit aggressively, initially prevailing in a motion to transfer the case to the district where Geotab is located. Geotab further identified reasons for non-infringement, exposed WirelessWerx’s positions as self-contradictory and groundless, set forth grounds for patent invalidity, and moved for sanctions against WirelessWerx and its counsel for pursuing a frivolous lawsuit. WirelessWerx admitted defeat and agreed to a full and final dismissal of the case with no payment from Geotab.

“Geotab commits to taking a stand against baseless lawsuits that are just pressuring the defendant for a quick settlement,” said Dirk Schlimm, Executive Vice President, Geotab. “We’ve dedicated time and resources to building strong cases against these sorts of claims, and have had repeated success over the years. Earlier Geotab wins in similar matters include StormbornSunset LicensingInventergyOrthosie, and Rothschild.”

Geotab hopes its actions will encourage others in the fleet management industry to take a stand. Schlimm noted that, “Geotab is happy to share its insights with fleets who are being pursued by NPEs.”

Geotab's cross-functional internal patent litigation team collaborated with Wolf Greenfield & Sacks, P.C., to develop and execute Geotab's innovative and aggressive strategy to help combat NPE patent litigation and dispose of these lawsuits.
