Holman and White Cap: data-driven fleet safety at scale

Table of Contents
White Cap is a leading distributor of construction supplies, serving complex infrastructure and industrial projects across the U.S. With over 1,600 vehicles on the road and more than 3 million miles driven each month, the company’s fleet plays a critical role in keeping projects on schedule.
As the business grew through acquisitions, White Cap needed to standardize fleet performance and safety protocols across the board. They turned to Holman and Geotab to help them develop a smarter, more accountable approach to driver safety.
The challenge: embedding safety into every mile
White Cap’s fleet is central to its customer promise – delivering materials quickly, reliably, and safely. But with varying standards across branches and underused telematics tools, the company struggled to create visibility and consistency at scale.
Leadership needed better insight into driving behavior and a clear way to hold teams accountable. Safety events like speeding or seatbelt violations weren’t being flagged consistently, and driver coaching was often reactive rather than proactive.
The solution: a smarter system, powered by people and platforms
To improve safety outcomes and create fleet-wide accountability, White Cap worked with Holman – a global automotive services company that provides comprehensive fleet management, including strategic planning, maintenance, and leasing. Holman also acts as a key Geotab partner, helping businesses like White Cap make better use of telematics data.
Together, Holman and Geotab designed a safety strategy tailored to White Cap’s needs. Geotab GO9 devices and the MyGeotab platform were deployed across the fleet to collect real-time data on vehicle and driver performance. Holman helped operationalize that data into a four-phase rollout that included:
- Clear expectations for driver behavior via a discipline matrix.
- Push reporting through Driver Safety Scorecards for manager visibility.
- Real-time notifications and alerts to enable proactive coaching.
- Dashcam integration to provide context and support driver accountability.
White Cap also used Geotab features like custom Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs), geofencing, and ELD logging to support inspections, cost allocation, and compliance across its branches.
The results: culture change backed by numbers
Within just a few months, White Cap saw dramatic improvements:
- Seatbelt use rose by 97%
- Aggressive driving incidents such as sharp cornering, hard acceleration and harsh braking fell by 62%
- The company now regularly achieves a 96 – 97% safety rating on its safety scorecards and has fostered a more engaged, accountable safety culture.
Next steps: scaling success
With measurable results in hand, White Cap is continuing to expand its dashcam program and refine its coaching playbook. The company is also exploring new opportunities to use Geotab data to improve compliance, maintenance, and cost controls.
