King Township projects a 349% 12-month ROI with Geotab Vitality

Based on the pilot data, its 12-month model projects $37,735* in net savings and a 349% return on investment (ROI) across a 60-vehicle scope.

The challenge: giving drivers feedback in a publicly visible fleet

King Township’s vehicles travel through residential streets and school zones carrying the municipal name. For Barry Budhu, Manager of Transportation, Utilities and Fleet Services, promote a safety driving by reducing speeding was a priority because residents could see it and raise concerns about it.

King Township manages more than 130 vehicles and 200+ assets valued at over $37 million. Budhu oversees the fleet alongside one lead mechanic and one apprentice, while also managing road operations and right-of-way permits.

The Township’s vehicles are shared across divisions, and drivers rotate equipment depending on the job. Vehicle-level telematics could show how a vehicle was driven, but it did not give each driver a consistent way to review their individual performance between periodic meetings. Budhu wanted drivers to see their results and take an active role in improving them.

The solution: a driver-facing program built on existing telematics data

King Township’s fleet technology partner, Optisolve, recommended Geotab Vitality based on the Township’s priorities: reducing risk, addressing speeding and engaging drivers.

Geotab Vitality uses the Township’s existing Geotab telematics data. Drivers receive daily scores across speeding, braking, acceleration and cornering. They can review their scores in the Geotab Vitality mobile app and earn rewards for improving their performance.

Budhu worked with Human Resources to introduce the program to a mixed union and non-union workforce. The pilot included a cross-section of 21 drivers from different divisions. The Township explained how the scores worked and how the data would be used, presenting the app as a way for drivers to monitor and improve their own performance.

One driver told Budhu, “I didn’t realize how good a driver I was.” The app gave drivers a way to see positive performance as well as opportunities to improve.

4 measured pilot changes and projected 12-month savings

1. Speeding improved by 10.9% at the 30-day mark

   Speeding was the Township’s primary pilot objective. King Township reported a 10.9% improvement at the 30-day mark. Budhu said the improvement remained consistent after it was established.

2. Predictive collision risk decreased by 7%

   The pilot showed a 7% reduction in predictive collision risk (PCR). PCR is a risk measure; it is not a count of collisions. The ROI model used industry-standard cost benchmarks to estimate the financial value associated with this change.

3. Fuel efficiency improved by 6.4%

   King Township reported a 6.4% improvement in fuel efficiency against baseline expenditure. The financial model used this change to estimate potential fuel savings. Budhu said the Township would assess the budget impact through its budgeting process.

4. Driver retention improvement was included as a projection

The ROI model included a projected 5% improvement in driver retention, using replacement-cost benchmarks. This figure is a model input, not a measured 12-month retention outcome.

How King Township projected a 349% ROI

It models the savings across a 60-vehicle scope, which is distinct from the Township’s reported fleet of more than 130 vehicles. The savings model uses three inputs: 

• 7% reduction in predictive collision risk
• 6.4% improvement in fuel efficiency 
• projected 5% improvement in driver retention.

It applies industry-standard cost benchmarks to predictive collision risk, baseline expenditure to fuel and replacement-cost benchmarks to retention. These are annualized projections based on a three-month pilot.

A different feedback loop for drivers and managers

The pilot also changed how Budhu and drivers discussed performance. Drivers could see their scores and recognize positive results without waiting for a periodic performance meeting. Budhu described the app as an extension of his positive-reinforcement approach to management.

The next phase

King Township converted to a paid program on April 1, 2026, six weeks after it accepted a 2026 Geotab Innovation Award at Geotab Connect in Las Vegas. Full fleet adoption is the immediate next priority. Drivers not yet enrolled are already asking when they can participate. Barry expects competitive engagement to intensify as more drivers join, and results to improve accordingly.

The cultural shift ultimately drove a definitive business case for the finance committee. King Township demonstrated a projected 349% ROI, meaning the program paid for itself well before the pilot concluded. Barry is taking these results directly into the Township's next budget board meeting. By replacing basic operational data with hard financial metrics, he is presenting a proven accountability story that justifies full fleet expansion to the municipal council.
