On-board diagnostics and the remote mechanic

Last updated on December 27, 2023 in Productivity by Geotab |  1 minute read

Every vehicle owner has taken their car to the mechanics after noticing unusual system operations. On-board diagnostics are the first line of defense.

Every vehicle owner, at some point or another, has taken their car to the mechanics after noticing unusual system operations. Sometimes the issue can be detected right away, while at other times the technician cannot spot the exact concern, or one thing is fixed only to learn that something else has gone wrong in the meantime.

On-board diagnostic systems give you access to understanding the health of your vehicle. Electronic diagnostic tools are standard pieces of equipment that can be found in a mechanics toolbox. These tools are usually the first line of defense in determining estimates and probable cause of motor or comfort system issues.

Telematics devices that communicate with a back-office system, however, can abolish the need for going in to see a mechanic to uncover the problem. In other words, vehicle diagnostic and maintenance checks can be done automatically and remotely with the use of telematics technology.

Summary reports clearly showing what is going on with your vehicles are provided on-demand within the fleet management software, which can be auto-emailed at any time. Diagnostics information includes engine and emission systems, while maintenance information includes oil life, mileage, and tire pressure.

The core benefit of always being in the know rests in getting rapid responses that highlight whether or not you have a major problem that could negatively impact driver safety. Looking for vehicle trends gives a proactive “heads-up” on a situation that is likely to occur if not addressed with priority. Additionally, trained technicians can use this intelligence to make more confident and informed vehicle repair decisions. The future of the “remote mechanic” is constantly evolving, being re-shaped through collaborative insights, and adding greater organizational value.
