Inside GO Focus Plus: Geotab's native AI dash cam

GO Focus Plus is Geotab's native AI dash cam – designed and built by Geotab, running on the MyGeotab platform. It monitors the road and the driver simultaneously, coaches in real time through in-cab voice alerts and connects camera, telematics device and coaching platform as one system.

Inside GO Focus Plus: Geotab's native AI dash cam

Key Insights

  • GO Focus Plus detects risk from two directions at once — road hazards like tailgating and lane departure, and driver behaviors like phone use, fatigue, and distraction.
  • In a 90-day pilot, one large US fleet cut driver phone use by 95% after deploying GO Focus Plus in-cab voice coaching.
  • GO Focus Plus is designed and built by Geotab, running natively on the same platform as your GO device — camera, telematics data and coaching in one place.

The challenge for any fleet safety team is being in two places at once: in the cab when risky behavior happens, and in the data when it's time to act on it. GO Focus Plus is Geotab's native camera solution – firmware-based, platform-native and designed to handle both. It alerts drivers with voice feedback in the cab the moment a risk is detected and routes every flagged event to a coaching workflow, keeping camera, telematics data and safety program in one place.

A few core capabilities power that experience. Here's how they work together.

What GO Focus Plus detects

GO Focus Plus detects risk in real time because its AI models run directly on the device – no video is sent to the cloud for processing first. The camera analyzes footage on board, so when a driver tailgates or picks up their phone, the detection happens in the moment.

Running on Geotab firmware, GO Focus Plus auto-pairs with Geotab GO Devices – the in-vehicle telematics hardware already managing the fleet – automatically linking camera footage with vehicle data like speed, GPS and location from day one. It self-calibrates on installation, with no manual configuration required.

The road-facing Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) sensor models detect:

  • Tailgating
  • Rolling stops
  • Swerving
  • Lane departure
  • Speeding
  • Blind spots
  • Near collision
  • U-turn violations

The driver-facing Driver Monitoring System (DMS) sensor models detect:

  • Phone use
  • Distraction (eyes down, head turn)
  • Fatigue
  • Smoking
  • Eating and drinking
  • Seatbelt infractions

Video is recorded continuously in 1080p HD, clear enough to identify faces, recognize license plates and hold up in legal proceedings when footage is called into evidence. With up-to 365-day cloud storage, that footage is available for the full duration of most insurance claims and legal matters, long after many systems would have deleted it. Live streaming gives managers a real-time view into any vehicle directly from MyGeotab, without waiting for an event to be flagged.

In-cab active coaching with real-time voice alerts

When GO Focus Plus identifies a risky behavior, a voice alert fires in the cab, specific to what

is happening. That gives drivers the chance to correct the behavior on the spot before an incident occurs and gives managers one less incident to review.

Detection accuracy for distraction, fatigue and tailgating consistently is up to 99%. That’s important because when false alerts are too frequent, drivers tune them out, and a system drivers don't trust stops changing behavior. At up to 99% accuracy, alerts are reliable enough that drivers respond when they hear them.

In a 90-day pilot, a large US fleet cut driver phone use by 95% after deploying GO Focus Plus in-cab active coaching and system reliability runs above 99.9% – both on the device and in the cloud. In a separate head-to-head evaluation, a major fleet chose GO Focus Plus over Motive, citing better driver insights, better coaching results and a significant drop in risky driving.

Single-view event review with Smart Sequence™

In most fleet camera setups, reviewing driver events means clicking between screens, sorting through hours of video and piecing together info from different places to understand what happened. Smart Sequence™ removes that entirely.

With Smart Sequence™, every flagged event comes with video, speed, location and what triggered the event all in one view – what happened, how fast, where and why it was flagged, without opening a single separate screen. The clip plays on hover. When a driver shows multiple risky behaviors in the same trip, the full sequence is visible together. Managers walk into a coaching conversation with full context. And through the Geotab Video Driver App, drivers can see exactly what their managers see.

The coaching workflow

Every detection feeds into a Driver Distraction Score within the Video Coaching platform, building a risk profile for each driver over time. Before a coaching session can be assigned, though, someone needs to know who was actually behind the wheel, particularly in fleets where vehicles rotate between drivers. Smart Driver ID uses AI to identify and recommend driver assignment for each flagged event, so coaching reaches the right person every time.

From there, each event connects directly to a coaching session with video, risk level and next steps in one view. Sessions can be assigned, tracked and completed within the platform, with automated recommendations surfacing which ones to prioritize based on severity and repeated behavior.

Privacy controls configurable by the fleet

Because GO Focus Plus includes an in-cab camera, privacy controls are built into the platform. The in-cabin camera can be turned off from MyGeotab, and footage can be configured to blur faces and license plates. A camera cover is also available for additional privacy.

For fleets with specific privacy requirements or collective agreements, the GO Focus Plus Road skips the driver-facing camera entirely. Instead of monitoring the driver directly, it uses Geotab's proprietary Road DMS technology – AI that reads driving patterns from the road-facing sensor (swerving, erratic lane position, reaction time, following distance) to infer driver behavior. Fleets get driver behavior insights without any in-cabin footage.

The GO Focus family of native AI dash cams

GO Focus Plus is one of three native AI dash cams in the Geotab GO Focus family, each built for a different level of fleet safety need:

  • GO Focus: Road-facing footage and driver exoneration, no in-cabin camera or microphone
  • GO Focus Plus: DMS and ADAS detection, in-cab active coaching, and Smart Sequence, all running natively on the Geotab platform
  • GO Focus Pro (coming soon): full 360-degree visibility and advanced AI inferencing

All three share Geotab’s firmware foundation and MyGeotab integration – the difference is in detection coverage and privacy configuration. Compare all three GO Focus models and find the right fit for your fleet.
